![]() ![]() In short: Contrary to the message sent out by McKinsey, you can actually prepare really well for this assessment and increase all relevant skills in a short amount of time. With their input, we were able to develop both strategies on how to prepare but also on how to play the games successfully. We used their dissatisfaction as a starting point to sit down with experts on the topic while continuing to talk to more and more test-takers from all different countries at the same time. Some of them even prepared for the PST beforehand since they were unaware of any changes in the testing strategy. ![]() If they had known how the games would look like and what skills were tested, they could’ve managed it better. We interviewed some of the first candidates, which took the initial Imbellus Test in London in November 2019 (the first round that was actually used as a screening device in the recruiting process and not just a beta test) and their feedback was very clear. It became clear relatively quickly that the latter was more of a marketing statement than anything else. After all, McKinsey applicants are used to preparing weeks or sometimes even months for the PST and the job interviews. Second, McKinsey touts that due to the nature of the games, you cannot prepare for it properly, which left applicants uneasy and confused about how to approach it. It replaces the Problem Solving Test (PST), which was a traditional pen-and-paper-based assessment that evaluated how well you can solve business problems under time pressure. First, the Problem Solving Game is an actual computer game, which is a novel recruiting device in this industry. The launch and gradual introduction by the world’s most prestigious consulting firm has made quite some waves in the consulting space, mainly for two reasons.
